Waimea Valley Trail

Waimano Falls

This hike is easy for the most part, but there are a couple sections on the way back that are VERY steep and muddy. However it is completely worth it after relaxing at the crystal clear pools at the bottom of the trail for awhile before heading back.

Manoa Falls Trail

The trailhead is a short drive from downtown Honolulu and can be accessed at the end of Manoa Road. Visitors might also be interested in the nearby Lyon Arboretum and Botanical Garden which preserves endangered Hawaiian plant species.

Makiki Valley Loop Trail

Parking: Yes, in the first parking lot located near 2131 Makiki Heights Drive (just past Hawaii Nature Center)

Muddy hike that is doable for the whole family.

Makapu’u Point Lighthouse

Most of this hike is on a paved road with a steady incline to the top. The best time of year to go is during whale season, from November to May, because there’s a really good chance you’ll see humpbacks from the top!

Koko Crater Botanical Garden

This one is more of a stroll than a hike. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and take lots of pictures! Remember to bring water, on most days it can be very dry and hot.

Kaiwa Ridge / Lanikai Pillbox Trail

Length: 1.7 miles
Elevation: 630 ft
Parking: Trailhead is in a residential neighborhood where parking is very difficult.
Est. Time: 1 hour

It is best to find parking near Kailua Beach and walk (~0.5 miles) through the neighborhood to the trail, but please be respectful and mindful of the nearby residents.
Start this hike before sunrise for some of the best views in Hawaii. If you’re doing this one anytime after sunrise, wear sunscreen because there isn’t much shade.

Kaena Point Trail
Kaena Point State Park Waialua, Oahu

Length: 5.5 miles
Elevation: 440 ft
Parking: Small parking lot open sunrise to sunset. Approximately half mile walk on the beach to the trailhead from street parking
Est. Time: 2 to 3 hours

As of March 2021, the road leading to the trailhead is closed so parking can be difficult. It is a long drive up to the very northwestern tip of the island, but it’s worth it if you have the time.

Diamond Head Summit Trail

The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:00 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time.

Aiea Loop Trail

The elevation gain is very slow, making this hike mostly long and flat. It can be really muddy after a good rain, so wear shoes that are comfortable but easy to clean.

Open on March 19, 1904, the Waikiki Aquarium is the second-oldest public aquarium in the United States. Opening with 35 tanks and 400 marine organisms, it was proclaimed as having the finest collection of fishes in the world. The Honolulu Zoo is unique in that it is the only zoo in the United States to be established by grants made by a sovereign monarch.

In 1914, the City of Honolulu assumed responsibility for Kapi`olani Park and Ben Hollinger, the first Park Director for Kapi`olani Park, began collecting animals “for the children of Hawai`i.” His collection began with a monkey, bear and an African elephant. In 1947, 42.5 acres within Kapi`olani Park, was designated as the Honolulu Zoo. A Master Plan in 1984, was developed for a Tropical Zoological Garden. All exhibits were organized into three tropical ecological zones: the African Savanna, Asian and American Tropical Forests, and Pacific Islands.

There are approximately 900 different animals from the tropics that now reside at the Honolulu Zoo. Komodo Dragons, orangutans, elephants, primates, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and a variety of African animals can be viewed in their specially-designed habitats daily.

Bay View Mini-Putt and Zipline features two 18-hole miniature golf courses: The hilly Pali Course and the deceptively-challenging Likelike Course. BVMP&Z also features a 400 foot long zipline that begins in a suspended launch platform in a banyan tree and spans over the Likelike Course.
